Union Update: April developer livestream

Hey Anno Community,

As you might have seen from our social post last Friday, we announced a couple of things happening in the upcoming weeks.

Back in February, during our IGN Fan Fest segment, we mentioned we would show more of the game in April… well, we got the months mixed up. The full gameplay reveal will happen during the week of 19th May.

In the meantime, what about a developer livestream next week? During this livestream, we will be talking about changes to the Needs and Attributes system with Creative Director Manuel and Game Director Jan. So, if you’re curious to more about these topics, don’t miss out our livestream on Twitch, 15th April at 5:00 PM CEST / 9:00 AM PT.

We’ll see you there!

Hi! I’ve been playing Anno since I was a kid, starting with Anno 1404. Now I’m wondering why there haven’t been any land units ever since. Is the community now just made up of building fanatics? What happened to strategy and warfare? Especially when the game is set in Rome, you’d think there would be land forces—what else were the Romans known for? I find it hugely disappointing that any aspect of strategy or war has been removed from the game.

On top of that, all NPC characters are softened up. It’s a shame the game is now reduced to city-building with a pseudo-war element that only involves ships, which can’t compare to the fun of land units. Why call it Anno at all, and not just City Builder?

I totally agree with you. I mean i see why it would be hard to implement land warfare in 2070, 2205 or even 1800. But 117 is a perfect opportunity to come back to the very roots of this series.

Please, no. Most other RTS games devote development resources to warfare and the specific reason I love Anno is because there is little military fighting. I’ve played every Anno and my least favorite part of any of them is way back when you could send ground forces onto islands.
Hopefully the huge success of 1800 has proven to the developer and studio that warfare isn’t needed for this series to be successful.

I agree, please no. This is not a war game. It is a city builder/resource management game. I totally disagree that warfare is one of the roots of the game. I’ve played them all. Land combat has gradually become less and less important.
To those who say “but it’s the Romans,” look at the sub-title. Pax Romana means Roman Peace, Peace lasted about 200 years, starting in 27BC, so 117 is well within this period.
